The Miss Universe pageant has long been a prestigious event in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in South Africa, but this year’s journey has been marred by controversy, stirring tensions within the region. Contestants have faced a particularly challenging path, with issues of identity sparking significant debates. Despite the difficulties, the hopefuls have now progressed to the next phase, moving closer to the ultimate goal of being crowned Miss Universe 2024.
This year’s competition has not been without its share of discord. In South Africa, the national beauty pageant faced backlash surrounding identity politics, which led to a heated public debate. This controversy also extended to Nigeria, where the situation escalated into a diplomatic row between the two nations. However, amidst the tensions, the excitement builds as the countdown begins for the highly anticipated Miss Universe 2024 finale, scheduled to take place on 16 November in Mexico.
Among the standout competitors is Zimbabwe’s Sakhile Dube, who has quickly became a fan favourite. With early predictions already naming her as a strong contender for the crown, Dube’s journey has captured the attention of pageant enthusiasts across the region. Her rise to prominence comes after years of dedication to the world of pageantry. The 27-year-old fashion model first gained national recognition when she won the title of Miss Tourism Zimbabwe in 2020, followed by Miss Earth Zimbabwe in 2022. Her success continued in 2023, when she secured the title of Miss Supranational Africa, propelling her to the global stage.
Dube’s multifaceted talents extend beyond the pageant world. A student at the Milan School of Fashion in Italy, she is pursuing a degree in Fashion Design and Styling. In addition to her academic achievements, she is deeply committed to philanthropy. As the founder of the Zibusiso Foundation, she leads initiatives focused on empowering vulnerable children in Zimbabwe through education and social support. “Our mission is to provide sustainable solutions to the challenges faced by disadvantaged children, offering them the opportunities they deserve,” Dube said in a recent interview.
While Sakhile Dube continues to capture the admiration of many, South Africa will be represented by Mia Le Roux, and Nigeria will be represented by former Miss Universe finalist Chidimma Adetshina. However, the announcement of the top 20 finalists generated mixed reactions. While some Nigerian fans expressed disappointment over Adetshina not making the final cut, others praised Dube for her elegance and composure, with many South Africans lauding her as a worthy representative of the continent.
As the competition nears its climax, all eyes are on the final contestants. With only days remaining before the world witnesses the crowning of the next Miss Universe, Sakhile Dube’s journey has become a source of pride for many in Zimbabwe and across Africa.
