Microsoft has announced a significant investment of $1 million to equip one million Nigerians with artificial intelligence (AI) and digital skills over the next two years. This initiative, unveiled during the Microsoft AI Tour in Lagos, aligns with the company’s broader vision to strengthen Africa’s digital ecosystem and prepare its workforce for the evolving global economy.
The training programme will be delivered in collaboration with leading organisations such as Tech4Dev and Data Science Nigeria. It aims to enhance employability by providing education in AI and cybersecurity, equipping Nigerian youth with the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly tech-driven world.
Speaking at the event, Ola Williams, Microsoft’s Country Manager for Nigeria and Ghana, highlighted the transformative potential of AI and the company’s commitment to fostering digital inclusion. “This is a strategic investment to ensure Nigerians not only gain the skills to use AI but also develop cutting-edge solutions and build AI-driven businesses that create sustainable livelihoods,” she stated.
This initiative builds upon Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to advance digital skills across Africa. In May 2024, the company, in partnership with G42, committed $1 billion to enhance Kenya’s digital infrastructure. This investment includes the development of a geothermal-powered data centre and an innovation hub aimed at driving technological growth in the region.
Microsoft has also pledged to train one million South Africans in AI and cybersecurity by 2026. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to democratise access to AI education and create a more equitable digital future across the continent.
By positioning Nigeria as a key player in the global AI landscape, Microsoft’s initiative is expected to foster innovation, entrepreneurship, and economic competitiveness. Through this investment, the company seeks to drive digital transformation, unlock new economic opportunities, and ensure that the Nigerian workforce is well-prepared for the future of AI-driven industries.
