Joshua K Chapata, known as the Paint Doctor, is a creative visionary, born 32 years ago in Bindura and raised in the capital city of Harare, he is an emerging artistic genius with a captivating journey through abstract art painting. In the early stages of his artistic exploration, Josh found solace in the act of scribbling, an affinity that knew no bounds. His fascination with pen-to-surface expressions became so consuming that he could often be found sketching on any available canvas. His passion evolved into a side hustle, drawing for fellow students and earning recognition not only for his talent but also for the unique artistry he brought to each piece.

However, his love for sketching began to walk the fine line between passion and rebellion. As he immersed himself in his craft, Chapata found himself in occasional trouble with authorities for his spontaneous scribbling on books, tables, and any other suitable surface that caught his eye. Fast track decades later, Josh has transformed into a remarkable abstract artist with an extraordinary talent for working with oil on canvas. From a young age, his artistic capabilities were evident, and now, they have blossomed into breathtaking pieces of art that consistently captivate audiences. His unique approach to abstract art has attracted such widespread interest that most of his pieces are swiftly sold out even before they have the chance to be formally exhibited.

Chapata advocates for celebrating local arts and artists to preserve and promote Zimbabwean culture, rather than relying solely on external validation.

Addressing the notion that arts and crafts are hobbies, Chapata contends that for many talented individuals, it should be treated as a serious career deserving respect. He notes the shift in local appreciation for his work, although pricing remains an issue, with some struggling to recognize the effort and value embedded in each piece.

Beyond his artistic endeavours, Chapata is committed to offering therapeutic sessions through art. He believes in the healing power of art, providing an escape from the demands of everyday life and fostering a therapeutic effect on the mind. In 2023, Chapata embarked on a transformative journey to Uganda for a foundation course exploring the origins of art and its influence on cultures, ethics, and civilization. Armed with this newfound knowledge, he envisions big plans for 2024, with the highlight being the “Pursuit of the African Dream Art Exhibition.” This ambitious event will showcase his artistic prowess through oil and water-based paints on canvas.

Starting the year on a high note, Chapata is hosting an art therapy session titled ‘The Newborn,’ exemplifying not only his artistic prowess but also his commitment to promoting art as a therapeutic and culturally significant endeavour. Gifted and fluid in his approach, Joshua is a serious contender within the country and region within the arts industry, he is poised to make a lasting impact this year and beyond.
