The official inauguration of the newly established Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) by the government of Angola marks a significant milestone. This state-of-the-art airport, constructed on a sprawling 43-hectare site by AVIC, is poised to become the primary hub for both passenger and cargo services, gradually superseding Luanda’s Quatro de Fevereiro Airport (LAD). Although the development of this government-funded project has spanned over a decade, facing intermittent delays, it now stands as a testament to Angola’s commitment to modernising infrastructure.
Ricardo Viegas D’Abreu, Angola’s Minister of Transport, emphasised to Simple Flying that the substantial public investment would be recuperated through the concession of airport management, development of the airport city, and strategic involvement of the private sector to unlock the full potential of the expansive facilities. According to José Paulo Nobrega, Coordinator of the Operational Office of the New Luanda International Airport, the facility is anticipated to play a pivotal role in driving the country’s economy, generating both direct and indirect employment opportunities.
The new airport, with an estimated construction cost of approximately $3.0 billion, stands as one of Africa’s largest and most ambitious infrastructure developments in recent times. Located 45 km from Luanda, Angola’s capital, in the Bom Jesus commune, the airport is designed to accommodate Boeing-747 and Airbus A380 aircraft. Encompassing a vast area of 50 km2, it is projected to handle up to 15 million passengers and 50,000 tons of goods annually.
China’s state-owned Aviation Industry Corp of China spearheaded the construction, delivering a comprehensive infrastructure package, including a passenger terminal with 12 aircraft finger-docks, a 4,200m northern runway, and a 3,800m southern runway. Additional amenities such as a hotel, shops, restaurants, and offices contribute to the airport’s potential to foster increased tourism and business opportunities.
Liu, an executive involved in the project, highlighted the incorporation of eco-friendly and energy-efficient technologies and equipment into the airport’s infrastructure. Smart devices will ensure a comfortable and convenient transit experience for passengers. Liu underscored that the project represents a substantial contribution from a Chinese enterprise, with advanced engineering machines and top-tier civil aviation equipment deployed. The initiative has not only injected momentum into local businesses such as construction materials, machinery, and logistics but has also significantly boosted local employment and economic growth.
Jose Paulo Nobrega reiterated the transformative impact of the airport on the economy, foreseeing it as a centre for sustainable development and urban mobility within the city. Moreover, he disclosed the Transport Ministry’s receipt of several indications of interest from international carriers looking to enter Angola’s market upon the airport’s opening. Nobrega emphasised the country’s evolving legal and economic framework, designed to make Luanda an attractive destination for various aviation operators.
The successful commissioning of the Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport is a groundbreaking achievement for Angola. Congratulations to Angola on this significant stride towards enhancing its economy and contributing to the advancement of Africa as a whole.
