President John Dramani Mahama warmly welcomed London Mayor Sadiq Khan to Accra on Thursday, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to deepening trade and investment relations with the UK. The meeting highlighted Ghana’s economic progress and explored opportunities for collaboration in urban development, business, and youth empowerment.
During their discussions, President Mahama outlined the significant strides Ghana has made in stabilising its economy, including a stronger cedi, declining inflation, and renewed investor confidence, achievements realised within just six months of his administration. He emphasised that these reforms signal a promising trajectory for the nation’s economic future.
A key focus of the talks was President Mahama’s ambitious 24-Hour Economy initiative, inspired by London’s thriving round-the-clock business culture. The policy aims to stimulate job creation, particularly for Ghana’s youth, by fostering a more dynamic and inclusive economic environment.
Mayor Khan, currently on a multi-city African tour spanning Lagos, Johannesburg, and Cape Town, praised Ghana’s development efforts and expressed enthusiasm for strengthening ties between London and Accra. He highlighted the vital role of the African diaspora in London’s economy and culture, noting the contributions of Ghanaians in sectors ranging from healthcare to finance.
The visit also served as a platform to enhance commercial links between the two cities. London & Partners, the Mayor’s business growth agency, facilitated a delegation of 36 UK-based companies exploring opportunities in Africa. Mayor Khan announced plans for a landmark London-Africa Business Summit next year, projecting UK-Africa trade to reach $79 billion by 2030.
President Mahama expressed keen interest in adopting London’s expertise in urban planning, transportation, waste management, and flood control to further modernise Accra’s infrastructure. Both leaders acknowledged the historical connections between Ghana and the UK, pledging to build on this foundation for mutual prosperity.
The dialogue underscored a mutual commitment to fostering innovation, investment, and cultural exchange. As Mayor Khan concluded his visit, the leaders affirmed their dedication to transforming discussions into tangible partnerships, benefiting not only their respective cities but also setting a precedent for international cooperation.
With Ghana’s economy on an upward trajectory and London seeking stronger global alliances, this meeting marks a pivotal step in a relationship poised for growth. The outcomes could shape economic policies, urban development, and youth opportunities in both regions for years to come.
