At the tender age of 5, Siya Kolisi found himself picking up his mother’s dislodged teeth from the ground, a consequence of his father’s violence. Siya’s narrative echoes a pervasive reality in Africa, where young marriages, adolescent pregnancies, domestic violence, poverty, and substance abuse are often part of the backdrop. Yet, today, Siya Kolisi stands tall as the revered captain of South Africa’s national Rugby team, the Springboks, affectionately known as the “ Bokke.” His journey is a powerful testament to life’s unpredictable twists and turns. Across Africa, there are countless Siya Kolisis, enduring hardship, but his story is a beacon of hope, illustrating that pursuing one’s passion can illuminate a path forward amidst adversity.
Siya recalls his grandmother’s remedy of sugar water at bedtime, an attempt to stave off hunger while sleeping, a poignant reminder of the scarcity that haunted his childhood. Siya’s fortunes began to change with the passing of his grandmother, aunt and mother. A perceptive educator named Erickson Wickley recognised Siya’s burgeoning affinity for rugby and secured his enrolment at… on a comprehensive scholarship. Excelling in his studies, Siya eventually made his foray into the world of professional rugby.
The indomitable Springboks shattered records, securing their fourth world championship victory, and with four tournament wins to their name, the Springboks are now outright the most successful team in Rugby World Cup history – a title they previously shared with New Zealand. Siya has been at the helm of the game helping the team as the captain helping the national team to thrive regardless of his background. His story is indeed one from grass to grace, one which African children should emulate, dreams do come true with hard work, persistence and commitment.
Despite his remarkable ascent, the scars of Siya’s past persist, leaving enduring psychological imprints. His stirring speech at the Heroes in Sport event in 2017 revealed a man who pauses to express gratitude to God before leaving his home each day. Siya finds joy in inspiring others with the modest means at his disposal, his experiences shaping a profound empathy for those grappling with similar struggles.
Congratulations South Africa for winning the Rugby World Cup.
