In one of the significant milestones in African sports, Rwanda President Paul Kagame officially inaugurated the newly refurbished Amahoro Stadium. After extensive renovations that began in mid-2022, the stadium now features a seating capacity of 45,000, up from its original 25,000 seats. The grand opening ceremony was graced by several high-profile officials, including CAF President Patrice Motsepe, President of the local football governing body Ferwafa, Alphonse Munyantwari, and Minister of Sports Aurore Mimosa Munyangaju.
Taking to the podium, President Kagame praised the contributions of Rwandans to the stadium’s renovation and acknowledged the support and inspiration from both African and global football governing bodies. “I want to extend my gratitude to brother Patrice Motsepe of CAF and another brother, FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Their support and inspiration have been crucial in our efforts to improve our sports infrastructure,” Kagame said. He emphasized that these enhancements would provide African children with the opportunity to train and display their talents on the continent.
President Kagame expressed the significance of having world-class sports facilities like Amahoro Stadium in fostering local football talent. “Such infrastructure will enable us to develop more talent within our country rather than relying on imports. While people will choose where they want to go, our commitment here will yield significant results. Today is a momentous day for Rwanda and football, and we will continue to make progress,” he stated. He also stressed the importance of hard work and smart strategies to ensure Rwanda is recognized among the best in Africa.
Two weeks prior, FIFA had approved Amahoro Stadium for hosting international football events following a thorough inspection by CAF experts. CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed his admiration for the stadium, stating, “This is one of the best stadiums in Africa and the world. We, as Rwandans and Africans, should be proud and thank President Kagame for providing such a facility.” He added that he looks forward to seeing Rwanda’s team compete against the best in Africa, given the talent and continuous improvements in the country.
Originally, the inauguration was scheduled for July 4 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of Rwandan Liberation Day. However, the Ministry of Sports rescheduled it to July 1 to avoid conflicts. The opening ceremony was followed by a friendly match for the Amahoro Stadium Inauguration Trophy, where Rwandan champions APR FC defeated Peace Cup winners Police FC with a 1-0 victory, courtesy of a goal by Gilbert Mugisha.
