Tourism has long been recognised as a transformative sector for many African countries. But is the continent marketing itself effectively to the world? The answer is increasingly affirmative. In recent years, African bloggers and content creators have worked tirelessly to highlight the beauty, culture, and potential of their homelands, putting Africa firmly on the global map. However, only a limited number of travel agencies have capitalised on this momentum by facilitating seamless travel experiences for international tourists.
In Zimbabwe, one visionary businessman is redefining the travel industry, Simba Mukorera, founder of Tripalot, a holiday booking platform is on a mission to revolutionise perceptions of tourism in the country. Speaking to Elevation News, Mukorera highlighted a critical issue, locals are often treated the same as international tourists, paying exorbitant prices to visit their own country. He noted that many Zimbabweans have never had the chance to experience iconic destinations like Victoria Falls or Troutbeck Inn in Nyanga due to unaffordable rates.
To address this challenge, Mukorera’s company, Tripalot, recently registered in both the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe, is taking decisive steps to make tourism accessible. By negotiating with local service providers, Tripalot aims to offer affordable packages for both Zimbabwean residents and international visitors. The goal is to create a stress-free holiday experience while keeping costs reasonable, allowing more people to explore Zimbabwe’s hidden gems.
Mukorera’s approach also challenges the dominance of high-cost booking platforms that charge steep registration and service fees. “Zimbabwe is an incredible country with vast, unexplored resources,” he explained. “There’s so much more to see than just Victoria Falls. Manicaland, for example, offers spectacular tourist destinations, with its mountainous terrain and pleasant climate in the Eastern Highlands presenting enormous potential for tourism.”
Encouragingly, Zimbabweans are beginning to embrace the idea of holidaying within their own borders, with new destinations emerging in previously overlooked areas. Rural tourism, in particular, holds significant promise. Mukorera cited KwaTerry, a rural tourism initiative that has gained traction, as a prime example of what can be achieved. Expanding rural tourism could create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and showcase the country’s diverse cultural and natural attractions.
Tripalot envisions itself as a platform that makes travel affordable and accessible for all Zimbabweans, fostering a culture of exploration and relaxation without causing financial strain. “The country belongs to all of us, and everyone should have the chance to enjoy its beauty,” Mukorera stated. “For visitors, Zimbabwe should be a place they want to return to, and cost should never be the reason they don’t.”
As the festive season approaches, Mukorera and the Tripalot team are busy arranging holidays for both locals and international tourists.
