Malawi’s entertainment industry is mourning the loss of another talented young artist, Kennedy Menya, known in music circles as Spyral Mwenya. This heart-breaking news was confirmed by Mr. Frank Phiri, Communications Director at FD Communications, where Spyral worked as a graphic designer.
The nation has recently lost several young musicians, including Andrew Masauli of Twin M outfit, Thomas Chibade, and Atoht Manje, all in the same year. Spyral’s untimely death adds to this series of tragic losses.
Spyral, who turned 29 on June 15th, was involved in a road accident in Mzuzu over the weekend and succumbed to his injuries. He was born in Chikulamayembe Village, Rumphi district.
According to his biography on the ‘Music from Malawi, Nyimbo ZachiMalawi’ platform, Kennedy Mwenya was a rising Hip-Hop artist from Blantyre, Malawi. He began making waves in the music industry in 2016. As a member of the duo Proud, Spyral established a solid reputation over the years. His dedication to his craft was evident, particularly with his 2021 LP “HIGH HOPES,” which featured the popular track “Ndimaganizo Bho.”
In addition to his musical talents, Spyral held a degree in Computer Science and was recognised as one of the top graphic designers in Malawi. Our condolences go out to Spyral’s family. He leaves behind a legacy through his music, which fellow artists and fans will remember for his remarkable talent and dynamic stage performances. Rest in peace, King of Hip-Hop.
